One-Minute Reset

“I don’t have any time for myself.” “I literally don’t even have time to pee.”  I hear it all the time.  But….

​

It’s not true. 

​

Wait, don’t leave.  I know it feels true.

​

I know there are days where you literally have to put yourself on mute to be able to go to the bathroom and, even then, you may have little fingers (or paws) trying to get to you from underneath the door. 

​

It seems like there is no time or space for you or your needs. You wonder, when did my schedule and obligations start running my life instead of the other way around? When did I lose control?  

​

My friends, it’s time to take the control back! To begin to shatter the belief that there is “no time.”  

       

So today, I challenge you.  For one week, set an alarm at some point during the day for your one-minute reset. A designated time to let go of all the noise and just be present. A YOU break.  When that alarm goes off – honor it.  Yes, I know it’s going to go off at some horrible time when you just CAN’T stop right now. But even that is just a thought. And its optional to listen to.

What is really going to happen if you take a minute off?  Yes, you may miss the small talk at the beginning of a meeting.  Or you may find that even a one-minute micro break leaves you feeling more energized, resilient, and ready to tackle the rest of your day.

​

During your minute – breathe.  Take a few of those deep belly breaths that are so good for you yet somehow so hard to fit into your day. Then pick one of your senses to focus on– what are 3 things that you can see, 3 things that you can hear, or 3 things that you can feel?

 

Really focus on the details. If you’re looking at a plant, notice the texture of the leaves, the thickness, the colors. Really look. It's ok if your mind wanders.  When you notice that you’ve wandered off, just come back to your 3 things.

How do you feel afterwards? My guess is some mix of relaxed, late, focused, impatient, bored, and peaceful.  The reality is that it takes practice.  It takes time to retrain your brain and your body.  It takes time to build the trust that you will prioritize time to be present.  To tune into yourself.  To acknowledge that there is space for you. 

​

Once you’ve got the one-minute reset down, use it as a launching point to build upon.  Expand the time or begin to seek other pockets of time just for you. You just may start to uncover some of your own needs.  To hear that little voice inside of you that has been silenced for so long.
